CATEC began sponsoring these programs last year as an opportunity to expose students to exciting career opportunities. CATEC students can attend the sessions, which will take place in the Charlottesville Public Access studio, as can other Albemarle and Charlottesville students who register with their counselors. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to hear about exciting career choices, but it also gives the CATEC TV Video Production students the hands-on practical experience of filming, taping, editing and producing the shows which are aired on Charlottesville Public Access TV. The TV Video students also create CD copies of the presentations to send back to the base school counselors and career specialists.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center Proudly
Announces New Courses for 2008
The Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) announced today that the school will be offering several new programs for the 2008 academic year. To address the growing need for health care workers, students in the Charlottesville area may now enroll in courses to become Pharmacy Technicians and Dental Assistants in addition to the pre-existing Nurse Aide, and EMT programs. These courses offer required content for licensure and are also designed to prepare students for two- or four-year post-secondary education.
CATEC is also excited to announce its partnership with the Charlottesville-based Music Resource Center (MRC) in the offering of a new Music Industry Technology course. The new course, which has no prerequisites, will provide students with practical experience in music recording, composing, arranging, and studio time utilizing current technologies.
“CATEC has a tradition of nurturing creative instructional programs,” says CATEC Director Darah Bonham. “The Music Industry Technology program is a natural addition that is proving to be of great interest to students. We are fortunate to have formed a successful relationship with the MRC, allowing us to offer this new course.”
The new courses will incorporate CATEC’s curriculum-wide goal of teaching 21st century skills and technologies to every student regardless of program interest. In addition to the core content of each program, students will have access to innovative technology tools, gain experience with business planning, and be exposed to entrepreneurship opportunities.

Culinary Arts Program Receives GrantCulinary Program Receives $2,500 Grant
As part of SkillsUSA's $2,500 Timberland grant opportunity, the Culinary Arts class submitted a community service project titled "One year of Blessing, Caring, and Thanksgiving to people in need, a commitment that never ends." The class project began in November 2007, and will be complete in December 2008. The first objective was to fully engage 28 CATEC Culinary Arts I and II year students in Community Based Service Learning by providing quality food, quality service, and care by exposing
students to real life situations involving people in need and to provide opportunities that involve various competencies, hands on learning, student creativity and class teamwork. The second objective was to expose the community to the many talents and gifts that our students possess.
The Culinary Arts program is the recipient of the $2,500 grant under the Highest Impact/Involvement category. Bob Bressan is to be commended for his efforts in providing excellent learning opportunities for our students and sharing an appreciation for the needs of others in our community.
“Our Trip to the Solar Decathlon”
By Carly Dobmeier
On October 18, the Carpentry II class took a trip to the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. There were 20 solar-powered houses designed and built by 20 different colleges from around the world. The colleges brought their energy-efficient houses to compete in the decathlon in various contests, such as energy use and aesthetics. I didn’t get to see all of the houses, but many used some of the same techniques to save energy.
Solar panels were a given to be used on the houses. A lot of foam and recycled insulation were also used to control and moderate temperature. A few houses used different plants on their roofs to provide more insulation and to control water run-off. The wood in some of the houses consisted of bamboo or cork, both of which are renewable resources. I also saw many different ways to filter water and reuse it in the same house. Most of the houses were small and made great use of space. The whole thing was really cool. I could see living in a house like that some day.
Carly Dobmeier, is a Home-Schooled senior in Mr. Ritter’s Carpentry class.

On Tuesday, October 9, the morning Nurse Aide Program took a field trip to Cale Elementary School. Our classroom objective was to teach the kindergarteners to wash their hands the proper way and why and how it was important to keep their hands clean during the upcoming cold and flu season. Our CATEC class of eleven people split into five groups consisting of two to three people in each classroom teaching 15+ children. It was a very productive thirty minutes in the classes. We taught the kids a valuable lesson and in return they taught us a lesson as well. We all had fun while on our field trip and it was one of our first bonding opportunities as a class. We would love to further our community projects with the younger children in order to help them learn important lessons. The morning Nurse Aide class is also going to be involved in community projects in the upcoming two months. We plan to go back out into the community and teach the younger school levels about good hygiene and how to take care of yourself. It will be a life changing event for some in our community and that is our goal, to reach out to them.
Heather Falwell is a student in Mrs. Kisha Woodson’s Nurse Aide class.
